And separately, <\/em><strong><em>a 5-meter cordelette<\/em><\/strong><em> which I reserve only for specific situations like self-rescue or retreat. When I'm guiding, or climbing a trad multi-pitch, the gear I carry is different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But it wasn't always this way, and not everyone knows they can opt for something more efficient without sacrificing safety. Let's look at it in detail.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em> Option 1: Anchor with 5m Cordelette (7mm)<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Setup:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>7mm \u00d7 5m cordelette + 2 locking D carabiners + 1 HMS<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Very versatile: can be used for quad, equalette, or other systems<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Reusable for self-rescue or retreat<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Useful for building <\/em><strong><em>sliding-X anchors<\/em><\/strong><em> or improvised anchors on the wall<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Heavy and bulky (especially if you're carrying more than one)<\/em><em><br><\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em> Option 2: 120cm Sewn Dyneema Sling<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Setup:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>120cm sling + 1 non-locking carabiner (fixed point) + quickdraw + 1 HMS (master point)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Very light and compact<\/em><strong><em><br><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Quick to set up, ideal for sport multi-pitch<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Sufficiently safe<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>More limiting on improvised anchors or sliding anchors where the bolts are far apart.<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em> It's my default option for sport multi-pitch climbing. Light, fast, functional. But what matters isn't just using it \u2014 it's understanding why it's sufficient and safe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Option 3: You Don't Need to Build an Anchor<\/em><\/strong>n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>On many bolted routes you'll find <\/em><strong><em>certified anchors<\/em><\/strong><em>, consisting of two bolts with a chain and a ring.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>What to do there?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>You clip directly with your personal anchor and set up your belay system for the second.<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>You don't need to build an additional anchor \u2014 the anchor is already there!<\/em><strong><em><br><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>That saves time and gear.<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em> That said: only if the anchor is in good condition and certified. If you have any doubt about the gear's condition, build your own anchor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>What Do You Typically See in the Field?<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Climbing teams overcomplicating things because something \"looks safer,\" without understanding that a more robust anchor isn't always better.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><br><\/em><em> \ud83d\udc49 That's why it's key that you understand:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\ud83e\udde0 So Then, Which One to Choose?<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There's no single answer. Strength and Breaking Force<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>7mm cordelette<\/strong> typically has a breaking strength between <strong>9.8 and 13.5 kN<\/strong>, certified according to EN 564 standards<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Dyneema slings <\/strong>offer approximately <strong>22 kN<\/strong>, more than double, despite being thinner<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This confirms that Dyneema, despite its smaller diameter, is <strong>considerably stronger<\/strong> than nylon cordelette.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Weight and Volume Management<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dyneema offers a <strong>strength-to-weight ratio ~40% better<\/strong> compared to nylon and steel<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its low volume makes it an ideal choice for those seeking <strong>lightness and efficiency<\/strong>, without sacrificing safety.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Elasticity and Energy Absorption<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most relevant differences between <strong>nylon<\/strong> and <strong>Dyneema<\/strong> is their <strong>energy absorption<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>nylon<\/strong> has some elongation capacity. This allows it to absorb some energy under dynamic loading.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Dyneema<\/strong>, on the other hand, has <strong>very little elongation (less than 3%)<\/strong>, which means that <strong>it doesn't absorb energy well in falls<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd0e <em>But here it's important to understand the actual context of use<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 <strong>When you use a Dyneema sling to build an anchor on a multi-pitch, you are not exposing it to a dynamic load.
